Atitlan Huipil and Leather Clutch
Atitlan Huipil and Leather Clutch
This luxurious Guatemalan Huipil and leather Clutch Bag has been handmade using 100% recycled Huipil from the Chichicastenango region, Corte textile lining and upcycled strong leather. The bag comes with a detachable upcycled leather strap, popper fastening, with pockets and separate compartments inside for cards or small items.
This Huipil and Leather clutch bag has been handmade by the Atitlan Women’s Weaving Co-operative, located in San Pedro de Atitlan. All of the weavers are single mothers and the Co-operative ensures they are paid fairly, so they can support their family and their children can receive an education, which in Guatemala is not free.
What is a Huipil?
The Huipil is the most common traditional garment worn by indigenous women within Mesoamerican parts of Central America, often more so in Guatemala and parts of Central Mexico. A handwoven garment, traditionally made by women using a backstrap loom with 100% natural materials such as Cotton and sometimes wool that are dyed with natural coloruings from plants and fruits. In Guatemala, each Huipil design represents a different region/department/community within the country, which is how you can tell where someone is from. Due to the nature of how they are made, each Huipil takes anything from 2 - 3 month to be completed, which is represented in their intricate designs and high quality craftmanship.
Why supporting artisan cooperatives is important to Laura:
Not only are the goods produced by the Atitlan Women’s Weavers incredibly high quality, but they are more importantly ethically and consciously made and produced. Meaning when you own one of their artisan goods, you know you are supporting an incredibly important cause too.
